We vet our captains to ensure they’re qualified.

Each of our captains provide licenses, certificates, resumes, and references, all of which we investigate. In addition, verbal interviews which include trouble-shooting and examinations may be given to applicants.

References

We demand quality references which can provide direct testimony to a captain’s skillset.

Step 1: Captain submits application to join our team.

Application includes License and Credential, resume, references, and additional materials – such as, capabilities statements, past projects, video.

Step 2: Bay Captain Vets captain applications.

We make a careful and critical examination of all applications to join our team. We research all public license and credential reference numbers to ensure accurate information is submitted. References are contacted. Resumes and additional material is evaluated to applicants meet our quality standards and are accurately stating their skills.

Step 3: USCG Reference Numbers

We review applicant Licenses for accurate and up to date information using the USCG MMLD Reference Lookup database: https://homeport.uscg.mil/missions/merchant-mariners/merchant-mariner-credential-verification.

Step 4: Applicant Resume and References

Utilizing our wide maritime network in California, we review applicant resumes and references for the closest connections we can find. We ask our captains to provide contact information to professional references that are known in the Bay Area marine community, that are trustworthy, and that can provide firsthand accounts of the applicants stated skillsets.

Step 5: Additional Material

After the successful passing of steps 3 and 4, we ask each captain to prove their knowledge, skillsets, and personability through various methods. Verbal interviews, online testing, video and testimonies are all methods we can use to determine the quality and accuracy of an applicant’s skillsets.

Step 6: Listing a Captain on BayCaptain.Com

We only list captains who have been vetted. We ask each captain to write their own brief bio, which includes their core capabilities and target clients. We then ensure that bio reflects what we learned during the vetting process, and we post it on our website.

Step 7: Removing captains from our list.

Captains will be removed from our list for various reasons. The expiration of licenses and credentials, the bad reviews of boat owners, heresy of negligence or malpractice, or at the request of the captain are all reasons we remove captains from our list.
